(I changed the center hourglass colors from pink and green to pink and brown -- because I already had this pink/brown hourglass from making 'extra' earlier in the quilt.)

This is the first short half diamond. One of twenty.

Color reversal in the goose because I already had this goose extra.  (It was to be a yellow center and red sides, but ... I'm trying to use up the bits and pieces that I have.)

The center stripe was supposed to be white, but again, I'm using up bits that I have.

R22 - The Last Large Diamond

R11 by jvc_scout_mom

There she is ... Miss America! Uhm, wait, that's wrong! Let's try again.

This is the last large diamond block. I have completed all 137 large diamond blocks for the quilt.

Wow! I've been sewing at this for just over one year and one month (and, I'm not done, yet!). There was a hiatus while I was waiting for sets to be released, and then for me to get motivated.

I have kept my resolution to stitch some each and every week this year. During this surgery recovery, when I couldn't move my sewing machine into place, I used 'stitch' liberally, and worked on my cross-stitching. :)

Well, off I go, to start cutting the pieces for the borders.

Cheers!

It wasn't until I was cropping this photo for publishing that I realized how lucky I was to have the red half-square diamond patterns to line up the way that they did. That was pure luck, no design on my part.

Four large diamonds remain to be completed.

First half of Set 12

First half of Set 12 by jvc_scout_mom
With these blocks complete, I have only SEVEN large half-diamonds left to sew. I hope to have them done by the end of the week.

I can't hardly wait to start on the half-diamonds for the border. Does that seem silly? I know that these half-blocks are going to be nearly as much work as many of the full-diamonds. As I recall, most of the half-diamonds have 11 pieces in them. That is the same number of pieces as many of the full diamonds. There is one half-diamond that has 23 pieces, and another that has 25. So, just because the blocks are smaller, that doesn't necessarily mean that they're easier! Although, I did rejoice that there will be no applique blocks! (It is the little things in life!)

Exciting News -- Set 13 - The Borders

Since I am at home recovering from surgery, time has been slipping for me.  I don't know what day I received the borders from Ann Holte, because of what I call my "confinement-amnesia."   (I don't know how the Comte de Monte-Cristo kept track of his years of confinement.  I have a hard time keeping track of a week.)

Today, I sat down and counted the pieces, and assigned colors to them.  As I did this, I discovered that my photos of the borders were not as vigilant as the photos of the large diamond blocks in the center.  Often, it took consulting two or three photos before I saw the entire block.  Thankfully, I did take so many of the photos, to make sure that I had photographs of all of the large diamond blocks in the center.

One thing that I did discover is that the maker used 'that darn plaid' as her binding.  I think I knew that before, but forgot.  She also used the fabric liberally in her border pieces.  I really wish that I could see this quilt in person again.  I'd like about 1,000 more photographs! :)

I have updated the Progress Chart.  The piece total is 3340.  I have 2653 pieces sewed.  I do know that some of the piece numbers will not match, as Ann and I have looked at certain fabrics differently -- me counting it as one, and her as many as 5 for one wide stripe.

Here is my really exciting news.  Okay, it's exciting for me.  My word of the week has been "Wow!" Next week, I will be staying with Ann for a day (two days, one night) for the AQS show in Lancaster.  I will be joining her and some of her quilt group for lunch, and then an old quilt discussion (discussion about old quilts) before heading into Lancaster with the group to see the Esprit Collection at the Lancaster Quilt and Textile Museum that evening. We will return the next day to see the AQS show, and Ann has a shift being a 'white glove' for the Esprit collection that afternoon.  Sometime in the process, I think Ann and I will have a chat about the quilt and blocks. :)  I've been going back and forth about taking my blocks or not.  I think I'm going to tuck them into the car, just in case. :)

Set 11 - Completed

Set 11 - Completed by jvc_scout_mom

Set 11 is completed.  That leaves 14 large diamonds to complete.  Since taking this photo, I have completed two blocks, which brings the total down to 12 large diamonds.

I received the half-diamonds through email yesterday.  I now have all of the components.  I just have to sew, sew, sew!

Sunday Evening

Sunday Evening by jvc_scout_mom
These are the two blocks that I completed this evening. They took about 5 hours in order to pick fabrics and sew.

M15

M15 by jvc_scout_mom
This block took a loooooooooong time to put together. Each of the five pieced diamonds was individually pieced. Most of the pieces are 1/4-inch in width.

I tried not to repeat fabrics (except on the edges where they were 'meant to' match).  There are 4 yellow fabrics, 8 red fabrics, 1 green, 1 blue, 2 tan, 5 brown, 2 white and three pinks.   The pink is repeated in the bottom diamond, and left center. One of the reds is repeated in the top block, and the right center.
